The Santa Barbara Center for Art, Science and Technology is underway along Garden Street, between Haley and Ortega Streets. This is a very exciting project for Santa Barbara as SBCAST is envisioned as a world-class, multi-disciplinary design center and a cultural arts asset and destination in the community. The new center will support both education and public outreach components to further public understanding of art, science and technology, in a creative environment.
Some of SBCAST’s operations will include design, development, and exhibition space. Infrastructure and tools will support work in New Media Art, Industrial Arts and Design. The space will consist of living facilities for up to nine artists/scientists/technologists. Several high tech tool rooms will be provided for working participants, and educational spaces will be available in order to promote opportunities for workshops, mentoring and lectures.
SBCAST is being created as a highly efficient, beautiful, and clean facility, designed to adhere to LEED requirements. Solar panels will supply the center’s electrical power and the site will incorporate a green (planted and landscaped) roof and water reclamation facilities.
